Tile & Grout Monster FAQs: Everything You Need to Know About Bathroom and Floor Care

June 10, 2020

Here are the Tile and Grout Monster FAQ’s , we’ve heard every question about tiles, grout, silicone, and bathroom cleaning. From “Why is my grout black?” to “How often should I reseal marble?”, no question is too big or too small. Below we’ve answered the most common queries our customers across Belfast and Northern Ireland ask.

General Tile and Grout Monster FAQ’s

1. Why do tiles pop off the wall?
Tiles usually pop off when the adhesive behind them has failed. This can happen because of moisture seeping in through cracked grout or silicone, or because the original installation wasn’t done properly.

2. Why is my floor showing dark lines after cleaning?
Sometimes what looks like “dark grout” after cleaning is actually the tile adhesive showing through. This happens when grout has worn away from years of scrubbing or traffic. The solution is to regrout, which we can do as part of our service.

3. Why won’t my grout stay clean?
Grout is porous, meaning it soaks up dirt, soap, and bacteria. Once it’s stained, scrubbing won’t fully restore it. Our specialist machine blasts the dirt out of the grout completely.

4. Why do household cleaners not work properly?
Most off-the-shelf cleaners, especially bleach-based ones, only lighten the dirt temporarily. They don’t remove it, so the staining always comes back.

5. How long does a professional clean take?
Most bathrooms take around 2–3 hours. We then recommend leaving the area unused for 24 hours to allow grout, silicone, or sealants to fully cure.

Silicone & Sealing Questions

6. How often should silicone be replaced?
Bathroom silicone usually needs replacing every 2 years. After that it starts to peel, crack, or turn mouldy, which can cause leaks.

7. Can you clean mouldy silicone?
Unfortunately no. Once mould has grown inside silicone, it can’t be removed — it must be stripped out and replaced.

8. What’s the difference between silicone and grout?
Grout fills the joints between tiles to hold them in place. Silicone is flexible sealant applied around baths, showers, and sinks to stop water leaking into gaps.

9. Can you reseal tiles and grout after cleaning?
Yes. In fact, we recommend resealing grout and natural stone after cleaning to protect against future staining.

10. What types of sealants are available for marble and stone?

  • Plastic film sealers sit on top and add gloss but wear quickly.

  • Water-based sealers soak in and keep a natural look, though they need reapplying every 1–2 years.

  • Solvent-based impregnating sealers last the longest and protect deeply without altering the stone’s look.

  • Enhancing sealers protect while enriching the stone’s colour and veining.

Floor-Specific Questions

11. How long does floor grout take to dry after cleaning?
Floor grout usually needs around 24 hours to dry fully. During this time, the area should not be walked on.

12. What if my floor grout is crumbling?
Crumbling grout means it has reached the end of its life. We can regrout the area, restoring strength and appearance.

13. Can you clean textured tiles?
Yes. Our specialist machine is designed to lift dirt from textured porcelain, slate, and other tricky surfaces that hold grime in grooves.

14. Do you clean marble floors?
Absolutely. Marble is one of our specialties. We use gentle, stone-safe methods to clean and prepare marble for resealing, keeping it looking luxurious.

Shower & Bathroom Panel Questions

15. What if I don’t have tiles in my shower?
We also clean and restore shower panels. Whether acrylic or PVC, we remove soap scum, limescale, and mildew, leaving panels fresh and spotless.

16. How do you deal with leaks from the shower?
Leaks often come from failed silicone or gaps in grout. We identify the cause, replace the sealant, and make the shower watertight again.

17. Can I keep using bleach in my shower?
Bleach damages grout over time and only masks dirt. We recommend avoiding it. After a professional clean, use mild cleaners and ventilation to maintain results.

Maintenance & Aftercare Questions

18. How do I keep my tiles looking clean after your service?
Ventilation is key. Open windows or use an extractor fan to reduce damp. Wipe surfaces down regularly with a gentle, pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals.

19. How often should I have professional cleaning done?
For bathrooms, every 12–18 months is ideal. Kitchens may need less frequent work, depending on usage.

20. Why choose Tile & Grout Monster?
