Types of Floor Tiles Belfast: Understanding What’s Under Your Feet

October 8, 2025

Tiles are one of the most beautiful and durable surfaces you can choose for your home. But not all tiles are created equal. Different types of floor tiles whether they are ceramic, porcelain, marble, slate, limestone, and more have their own unique structure and maintenance needs. Understanding what’s under your feet helps you protect your investment and keep your floors looking their best for years to come.

At Tile & Grout Monster, we’ve spent over four decades working with every kind of tile across Northern Ireland, Ireland & UK. In this guide, we’ll help you know your tiles  so you’ll understand how they’re made, what makes them different, and how to care for them properly.

Ceramic Tiles — Classic and Reliable

Ceramic tiles are one of the most common tiles found in Belfast homes. They’re made from natural clay, baked at moderate temperatures, and usually glazed to create a protective, shiny surface.

That glaze makes them resistant to moisture and stains — but also means once it’s worn or scratched, dirt and residue cling easily. Regular cleaning is simple: a pH-neutral cleaner and warm water do the job.

Because the surface is glazed, ceramic tiles don’t need sealing. However, the grout between them does, as it’s still porous and can absorb moisture and bacteria.

Porcelain Tiles — Durable and Dense

Porcelain tiles are the tougher cousin of ceramic. They’re baked at higher temperatures, making them denser, less porous, and more water-resistant. Perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, and hallways, porcelain tiles can be glazed, polished, or matt finished.

Porcelain tiles are extremely hardwearing and rarely stain, which is why we never recommend sealing them — it simply isn’t necessary. However, the grout around them still needs protection.

Polished porcelain can lose its shine with heavy use, incorrect cleaning products and it may be difficult to get back to an even appearance without scratching or dulling the surface.  Maintenance of polished porcelain by using a pH-neutral cleaner and warm water is an absolute necessary with this type of tile.

Natural Stone Tiles — Beautiful but Demanding

Natural stone tiles, like marble, slate, and limestone, are cut directly from the earth. That makes every tile unique — but also more porous and sensitive than manufactured tiles. They don’t have a protective glaze, which means they absorb moisture, oils, and bacteria if not sealed properly.

Each type of natural stone behaves differently:

  • Marble is elegant but soft and prone to etching.

  • Slate has a textured surface that traps dirt.

  • Limestone gives a soft, warm look but can crumble under harsh cleaning.

For these materials, sealing is essential — but only after a professional deep clean. Sealing over dirt simply locks the grime beneath the surface, making it nearly impossible to remove later.

That’s why our natural stone cleaning process includes a thorough deep clean to remove old residues before any sealer is applied.

Polished vs. Matt vs. Textured

Tile finish is just as important as tile type. Each finish interacts with light — and cleaning — in a different way.

  • Polished Tiles: Smooth and reflective, perfect for bright, elegant spaces. They need gentle cleaning to avoid streaks and dulling.

  • Matt Tiles: Have a soft, modern look but can attract surface dirt more easily. Regular cleaning with a neutral cleaner prevents build-up.

  • Textured Tiles: Ideal for grip and style, but dirt loves to hide in the grooves. These need periodic deep cleaning to stay hygienic.

Our Belfast tile and grout cleaning service adapts to each surface to protect its finish while restoring cleanliness and shine.

Why Sealing Matters (and When Not to Seal)

Many people assume all tiles need sealing — but that’s a myth. Glazed ceramic and porcelain tiles already have a protective layer baked on. Sealing them can actually leave residue or streaks.

Only natural stone tiles truly benefit from sealing, as it keeps water, oils, and dirt from soaking in. But remember sealing should always follow deep cleaning. If the floor isn’t completely clean, you’ll seal the dirt into the stone, creating blotches that are impossible to remove.

Can the Monster Machine Remove Old Sealants?

This is one of our most common questions, and the answer is important: No — our Monster Machine doesn’t remove sealants.

Our high-pressure extraction system is designed to remove dirt, bacteria, and grime, but not protective coatings. Old sealants must be stripped separately using specialist products before we carry out a deep clean. Once that’s done, the tiles can be professionally resealed for maximum protection.

Trying to clean sealed stone without removing old sealant first can cause patchiness or dull patches, which is why our inspections always include checking for sealant wear and residue.

Maintenance Tips for Every Tile Type

To keep your tiles looking their best:

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit.

  • Mop with pH-neutral cleaners (never bleach or vinegar).

  • Dry tiles after cleaning to prevent streaks.

  • For natural stone, reseal every 12–18 months depending on use.

  • For porcelain or ceramic, focus on cleaning and maintaining the grout.

These simple steps help prevent dulling, staining, and unnecessary wear.
